Treating Adults

Acupuncture for treating adults

There are many reasons why people seek acupuncture treatment. Some of the most common are for pain related conditions (such as muscular-skeletal conditions and headaches / migraines) but others are digestive difficulties, hay fever, anxiety, insomnia, gynaecological difficulties and the effects of the menopause. Lydia has experience of treating all of these conditions.

One of the great strengths of acupuncture is that it places great emphasis on the body as a whole. Therefore a patient may present with one particular condition (for instance anxiety) but through the course of the treatment they will also find relief with other aspects of their health (for instance their fragile digestive system) which they had not specifically sought treatment for.

Those coming for treatment have often already done such things as see their GP, been prescribed medication that only marginally helped (or didn’t do anything apart from give unwanted side effects), seen a physio, been referred for scans and seen hospital consultants.

An initial consultation with Lydia lasts for an hour and half, which allows sufficient time for a full case history to be taken and, if appropriate, a physical examination to be undertaken. This allows for an accurate diagnosis to be made and immediate treatment. The number of acupuncture treatments needed will depend on the complexity of the condition and how long the patient has had the condition. Given that a lot of patients present with complex, chronic conditions a course of six treatments is quite commonly required at the end of which Lydia will discuss whether further treatment is necessary. Those with less complex conditions, which they have had for a shorter period of time, feel the benefits of far quicker.

The British Acupuncture Council have produced fact sheets providing summaries of research as to how acupuncture may be beneficial for a whole range of conditions. These can be found at their website.
